Compelled To Spell It Out

I listen to just about the widest range of music possible.
Except rave. I don’t do rave.
Aside from that, the list of genres on my iPod could keep you going for hours. I used to be limited to pop music, until I phased into loving purely rock and alternative songs, and now I’ve found the balance where I can switch from dance to rock, from pop to ska. As long as there’s a catchy melody, or a drumbeat I can tap my fingers to, or some lyrics I can scribble again and again on my school books, chances are I’ll give it a listen.
Of course there are types of music I prefer over others; anyone who knows me even a little bit will tell you how much I love No Doubt! If you’re going to have a favourite band, you’ll inevitably be introduced to new kinds of music through their different styles and influences.
Everyone’s been asked that one question; the one that made you think more than any maths problem at school ever did. The one that you’ll change the answer to countlessly. The huge range of music I love to jam in my ears is one of the reasons I hate this question so much:
“What is your all-time favourite song?”
How can I even begin to answer that question? There are so many elements of songs that make them amazing—the lyrics, the guitar riffs, whatever else you love about them, so how could I possibly go through thousands of songs and get rid of all but one?
It could be the song with the current highest play count on my iTunes. It could be the first song I ever heard played live. It could be the song that brings tears to your eyes whenever you hear it—which I don’t actually have, being honest, I’m pretty sure I’m made of stone. :’)
One of the most beautiful, saddest songs ever, though, in my opinion, is Letting the Cables Sleep, by Bush. I have close contenders, but I loved that song the very first time I heard it. Everything about it is so powerful; the vocals, the haunting guitar melody, the strings accompaniment… gah. <3 You can listen to it here. I promise you’ll at least like it!
Music is everywhere. You can’t get away from it; when you’re commuting to work, you’ll hear a ringtone. Sitting at home, you’ll catch a theme tune on TV. Out catching up with friends, there’ll be some kind of tune following you around wherever you go.
Not that I see why anyone would want to get away from it. Because life without music would be, let’s face it, incredibly dull.
